FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I already sub for the district; do I have to reapply?

No, you won’t have to reapply, but current subs will need to enroll with Penmac. Completing our online application is the first step in the enrollment process (because that's how we gather your personal information for your employment and payroll records) but it's not a true application to be evaluated. As long as you still meet the qualifications to substitute, there won't be an interview process or other evaluation if you are an existing district substitute in good standing.

After the online application, we'll need to see you in person to complete your I-9 form and other employment documents. We’ll have enrollment sessions on-site at the district before the new school year.

How do I become a substitute for a local district?

We’re so glad you’re interested! If you’re new to subbing at the district, click here to begin your application. Please select the Harrison Penmac branch as your closest office.

Do you offer training for substitutes?

Yes! Penmac offers Sub 101 training to all substitutes, as well as ongoing professional development and in-person coaching in the classroom.

What are the requirements for becoming a substitute?

In Arkansas, substitute teachers must:

  • Have a high school diploma and be at least 18 years old
  • Long-term substitutes (covering more than 60 days) must have a bachelor's degree and a teaching license
  • Complete a fingerprint background check (Contact Penmac before completing this step for more details)
  • Complete required training provided by Penmac.

Penmac can support you through the process of applying and completing background checks. Other substitute positions, such as paraprofessionals, may have different requirements. Specific school districts may have additional requirements.

How often do I have to work?

A great perk of substitute teaching is that you work when it works for you! You can work as much or as little as you’d like.

Can I choose what building I want to work in?

Yes, substitutes can select preferences for building, grade level, or subject area.

What about insurance?

Penmac offers an affordable health insurance plan option with no waiting period! Coverage will begin on the Monday after your second weekly paycheck. More details will be available at enrollment, and you can also learn more at www.penmac.com/benefits.

Are there other benefits?

Yes, Penmac offers a retirement savings plan, including a 401k, and participation in an employee-ownership plan for long-term Penmac employees.

When will I get paid?

You will be paid weekly, every Thursday, for the hours that you worked the prior week.
