Onboarding Sessions for NKC Substitutes

Appointments will be available throughout the year; call or text 816-323-6791 to schedule yours!

An in-person meeting with Penmac representatives is required to complete your employment documentation, payroll setup, and other onboarding tasks.

For other updates, keep an eye on this webpage, or follow us on Facebook: Penmac Education Staffing - Kansas City

Plan to be at enrollment for around 30 minutes. It may take longer if you haven't completed the Penmac employment application and onboarding documents first.

You MUST bring these required documents to your session so we can complete your employment documentation:

  • Identification to meet I-9 form requirements (Click here for details). Most people bring either their passport OR both their driver's license AND social security card (or birth certificate instead of social security card).
  • Direct deposit account information (routing and account numbers) from your bank to complete your payroll set up

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I already sub for North Kansas City Schools; do I have to reapply?

No, you won’t have to reapply, but current subs will need to enroll with Penmac. Completing our online application is the first step in the enrollment process (because that's how we gather your personal information for your employment and payroll records) but it's not a true application to be evaluated. As long as you still meet the qualifications to substitute, there won't be an interview process or other evaluation if you are an existing NKC Schools substitute in good standing.

After the online application, we'll need to see you in person to complete your I-9 form and other employment documents. We’ll have enrollment sessions on-site at the district throughout the summer.

How do I become a sub for North Kansas City Schools?

We’re so glad you’re interested! If you’re new to subbing at the district, click here to begin your application. Be sure to select Kansas City Education (NKC) as your closest office.

Do you offer training for substitutes?

Yes! Penmac offers Sub 101 training to all substitutes, as well as ongoing professional development and in-person coaching in the classroom.

What are the requirements for becoming a substitute?

Substitute teachers must:

  • Have 36 college credit hours (in any subject) OR complete an online training program designated by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
  • Obtain a Missouri Teaching License or Substitute Certificate
  • Complete a fingerprint background check (Contact Penmac before completing this step for more details)
  • Complete required training provided by Penmac.

If you do not meet these requirements, but are still interested in subbing, Penmac can support you through the process. Other substitute positions, such as paraprofessionals, may have different requirements.

How often do I have to work?

A great perk of substitute teaching is that you work when it works for you! You can work as much or as little as you’d like.

Can I choose what building I want to work in?

Yes, substitutes can select preferences for building, grade level, or subject area.

What about insurance?

Penmac offers an affordable health insurance plan option with no waiting period! Coverage will begin on the Monday after your second weekly paycheck. More details will be available at enrollment, and you can also learn more at www.penmac.com/benefits.

Are there other benefits?

Yes, Penmac offers a retirement savings plan, including a 401k, and participation in an employee-ownership plan for long-term Penmac employees.

When will I get paid?

You will be paid weekly, every Thursday, for the hours that you worked the prior week.
